Built Home coup for Victorian builder
Victoria’s Scalzo Constructions, based in
the Melbourne bayside suburb of Black Rock, won the highly competitive
HIA-Stramit Building Products Custom Built Home of the Year category
at the Housing Industry Association’s annual awards in Brisbane
tonight. (Sat May 6). The prestigious award is partnered by Stramit
Building Products.
A feature of the winning entry is a curved swimming pool, with
living areas and the main bedroom built around it. Judges said
Scalzo gained theedge by meeting the challenge of the extensive
use of curved work and material. “The use of interesting
and innovative materials was one of the keys,” they said.
“These were different, but the harmony of the project was
never lost. “The significant problems presented by the urved
work were overcome well. In all, Scalzo Constructions had to cope
with a high level of difficulty in the construction of the project,
but came through it well.”

HIA Australian Home of the Year
Victoria’s Scalzo Constructions claimed the premier prize
at the 2006 Housing Industry Association awards when it was named
the winner in the HIACSR Australian Home of the Year category
in Brisbane tonight. (Sat May 6) The prestigious award is partnered
by CSR.
The company worked on an unusually large suburban block to design
a distinctive family home, with strong architectural lines and
a range of natureinspired finishes. The living areas and main
bedroom are built around a curved swimming pool blending indoor
and outdoor living to perfection. Judges said the house is skewed
on the block to allow maximum solar access. Curved rock-like walls
protect the south-western elevations. “These are contrasted
with a series of vertical and horizontal planes of cedar cladding,
which echo the forms of the surrounding native trees,” they
said. “The use of interesting and innovative materials was
one of the keys. “Even so, the overall harmony of the project
was never lost. “In all, Scalzo Constructions had to cope
with a high level of difficulty in the construction of the project,
but came through it well.”
